WHAT IS HIGH SPEED STEEL?

High speed steel is used for the making of tools.

And it is a subset of tool steels.

Commonly used as a cutting tool material.

It is a high performance steel with high hardness and good wear resistance properties.

Generally used for power-saw blades and also for drill bits.

Speed steel is better than the older high carbon steel tools.

as it used extensively in the pre 1950 years.

this high speed steel, withstand higher degree of temperatures without abandoning its temper (hardness).

This property of high speed steel allows it to cut faster in respect to high carbon steel.

When you observe it during recommended heat treatment, at room temperature.

WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS OF THE HIGH SPEED STEEL?

It is mainly used in manufacturing of cutting tools, such as

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT GRADES OF HIGH SPEED STEEL?

The different grades of this steel are:-

  1. M2 Steel
  2. M35 Steel
  3. M42 Steel

Grade 1. M2 Steel

M2 is a high-speed steel in tungsten–molybdenum series.

The carbides in it are small and evenly distributed.

It has high wear resistance.

After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T1,

but its bending strength can reach 4700 MPa,

and its toughness and thermo plasticity are higher than T1 by 50%.

It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers.

Its decarburization sensitivity is a little bit high.

Grade 2. M35 Steel

M35 Steel is similar to M2 Steel, but 5% cobalt is added to it.

The addition of cobalt increases its heat resistance.

M35 steel is also known as HSSE or HSS-E.

Grade 3. M42 Steel

M42 Steel is a molybdenum-series high-speed steel alloy with an additional 8% cobalt.

It is widely used in the metal manufacturing,

because of its superior red-hardness as compared to other conventional high-speed steels,

allows for shorter cycle time in production environment,

due to higher cutting speeds or from the increase in time between tool changes.

WHAT MATERIAL IS USED FOR COATING OF THIS STEEL?

To increase the life of high speed steel and tools, coating is done.

One such material for the coating is titanium nitride.

Most coatings generally increase a tool’s hardness.

The coating also helps to decrease the temperature associated with the cutting process,

and increase the life of the tool.

WHAT ARE THE IMPACT OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS ON THE HSS STEEL?

The impact of alloying elements on the hss steel are as:-

Carbon: Forms carbides, increases wear resistance, it is responsible for the basic matrix hardness.

Tungsten and Molybdenum: Improves red hardness, retention of hardness and high temperature strength of the matrix, form special carbides of great hardness.

Vanadium: Forms special carbides of supreme hardness, increase high temperature wear resistance, retention of hardness and high temperature strength of the matrix.

Chromium: Promotes deep hardening, produces readily soluble carbides.

Cobalt: Improves red hardness and retention of hardness of the matrix.

Aluminum: Improves retention of hardness and red hardness.
