WHAT IS M2 TOOL STEEL?

M2 tool-steel is a general purpose molybdenum high

speed steel.

This grade is characterized by balanced combination of abrasion resistance, toughness and good red hardness.

Due to its comparatively low carbon content,

M2 tool-steel has an excellent combination of toughness properties and abrasion resistance,

when properly hardened and tempered.

Grade m2 high speed steel is by using far the maximum popular high speed steel replacing high speed steel grade t1 in most programs.

The application of the m2 tool-steel is as follows:-

Ordinary programs for m2 high speed steel are broaching tools, reamers, twist drills, faucets, metal saws, milling tools. M2 is appropriate for cold forming tool which includes extrusion rams and dies. Additionally widely utilized in all styles of cutting tool ,die applications and knife and punches. Plastic moulds with expanded put on resistance and screws.

WHAT IS THE VARIOUS STEPS FOR MAKING M2 TOOL STEEL BETTER?

There are 5 various steps for making M2 tool-steel better :-

  • HEAT TREATENING.
  • TEMPERING.
  • QUENCHING.
  • ANNEAKING.
  • STRESS RELEAVING.

HEAT TREATMENT :-

Preheat at 1450 F before heating for hardening.

Then heat rapidly from 1450 F to 2200 F and hold for 3 to 5 minutes followed by quenching in oil, air or salt bath.

TEMPERING :-

Double tempering is mandatory. Temper at 560°C/1040°F  for a hardness of Rockwell C 60 to 65.

For hardness, strength and toughness the best tempering range is 1000 to 1050° F.

QUENCHING :-

Quenching to about 550°C / 1022°F then air cooling down to room temperature.

After equalizing withdraw parts from the air cooled and warm salt to 150° F.

ANNEALING :-

  • Soft annealing  at 850 ° C – 900 ° C / 1560 ° F – 1650 ° F temperature,
  • slow cooling 10 ° C / 18 ° F / h to 700 ° C / 1290 ° F, maximum 260 Brinell hardness.

STRESS RELIEVING :- 

Stress relieving For 600 ° C – 700 ° C / 1120 ° F – 1290 ° F, approx. 2 hours at temperature, slow cool cooling to 500 ° C / 930 ° F.
