Description: 

M2 is a general purpose molybdenum high speed steel. This grade is characterized by balancedcombination of abrasion resistance, toughness and good red hardness. Due to its comparatively low carbon content, M2 has an excellent combination of toughness properties and abrasion resistance.when properly hardened and tempered.

Applications:

M2  is  widely used in  all kinds of cutting tools, knife and punches and die applications.

Heat Treatment:

Preheat at 1450 F before heating for hardening. Then heat rapidly from 1450 F to 2200 F and hold for 3 to 5 minutes followed by quenching in oil, air or salt bath.

Tempering:

Temper at 560°C/1040°F  for a hardness of Rockwell C 60 to 65.

Quenching:

Quenching to about 550°C / 1022°F then air cooling down to room temperature.

Annealing:

Soft annealing  at 850 ° C – 900 ° C / 1560 ° F – 1650 ° F temperature, slow cooling 10 ° C / 18 ° F / h to 700 ° C / 1290 ° F, maximum 260 Brinell hardness.

Stress relieving:

Stress relieving For 600 ° C – 700 ° C / 1120 ° F – 1290 ° F, approx. 2 hours at temperature, slow cool cooling to 500 ° C / 930 ° F.
